Mr. Greenway and 18 TAHS students took a once-in-a lifetime trip to Washington D.C. with the Close Up program. This evening, Friday June 7, 2024 our students will arrive home. Thier trip has been amazing from the looks of the photos sent. Close Up inspires students to get engaged in democracy and teaches them the importance of civic participation. Students also saw the major sights of Washington D.C. and learned how each has contributed to our country. The students had the unique opportunity to meet with Senators Tina Smith and Amy Klobuchar and U.S. Representative Michelle Fischbach. They were able to ask some excellent questions of the congresswomen. They also got a feel for what the day-to-day life of a congresswoman is. Among other sites, the students visited George Washington’s Mount Vernon, the United States Holocaust Museum, Arlington National Cemetery, The White House, and took in a play at the historic Kennedy Center. Students gained an understanding of our democracy and that it is designed for us, the people. They have a better understanding about their role in it and that without the people, our country could not survive.
